Museu Europeu d'Art Modern (MEAM) - European modern art

First-class collections of modern art from the 20th and 21st century

If you are interested in impressive modern art, then you should definitely make sure your plan includes a visit to MEAM - Museu Europeu d'Art Modern. Located in the beautifully renovated Palau Gomis, the museum displays a first class collection of modern fine art from the 20th and 21st Century in alternating exhibitions housed within about 1,700m².

The Museu Europeu d'Art Modern (MEAM) was opened in June 2011 in the lovingly restored Palau Gomis. Without doubt, the Museum of European Modern Art is among the most successful re-openings in the diverse museum landscape of Barcelona. Located within the charming Old Town district of El Borne, it has long become a must for visitors interested in art.

The presentation of the collections of modern European art of the 20th and 21st Century is unique: the more than 250 years of history that the venerable walls have already seen, is seemingly in contrast to the modern art that it houses. Nevertheless the presentation of the collections conveys the impression that the ancient and the modern presented together here form part of a unit, even a symbiosis.

The MEAM is operated by the "Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes," a privately funded foundation. Their purpose is to promote the performing arts of the 20th and 21st Century. The requirement of the MEAM is to implement a new and contemporary language, while not denying tradition, and venturing into the 21st century with a leap forward.

A special concept of the private foundation is that it extends support to the artists of the museum and that it provides the space for their works. The background for this is the consequences of the economic and financial crisis, whereby financial grants are scarce.

The ground floor connects the small alley where there the Renaissance-style building is located with an elegant, 10-meter room. Here you go up an elegant staircase to the first floor of the exhibition space in the Belle Floor of the house.

The first exhibition "Modern Art of the XXI Century", organized by the MEAM, is displayed on three floors. It features photorealistic paintings and remarkable sculptures and is a tribute to all those artists who came to work for the museum, in the hope and that their work will continue and gain world recognition. We are confident that this will be the case.

You will find the MEAM in the Carrer Barra de Ferro, 5, just a few steps from the Picasso Museum. The ground floor houses a café and a small museum shop; where merchandise with images from the exhibition are available.

The Museu d'Art Modern Europeu is definitely worth visiting.
