Fundació Joan Miró

The museum with the works of Miró in Barcelona

The Fundació Joan Miró is a foundation, which operates in Barcelona the museum on the mountain Montjuïc. From the terrace of the museum you have a wonderful view over the sea of houses of Barcelona.

The museum was founded in 1975 still during the life of Joan Miró. There should be a large part of the works of the artist and exhibit space for works of innovative artists of the 20th Century. Joan Miró was interested in the Museum of the foundation as a place of inspiration and exploration of art in Barcelona.

As an architect, Joan Miró engaged  a friend of his: Lluis Sert. Sert had built the famous Spanish Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris in which the painting "Guernica" by Picasso had been issued. He built the Fundació in a Mediterranean style, and laid emphasis on natural light from the sun in the exhibition rooms.

Twice, the Fundació structurally must be expanded to make room for the works Miró create. The fully white building shows the visitors of the exhibition besides on the work of Miró also changing exhibitions of modern artists.

The artist himself donated most of the exhibits. Among them are sculptures known as the "Couple aux jeux d'amoureux de fleur d'amandier" (1975), pictures, drawings, ceramics and graphics. Miró created specifically for the Fundació a large complex tapestry, the visitor notices at the beginning.

A special attraction is the Fountain "font of mercury", which was donated by Alexander Calder who created it for the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937. In this fountain flows no water, but mercury. For this reason, it is firmly behind thick glass walls blocked.

On the large terrace of the museum are colorful sculptures Miró. From here you can enjoy a unique look of Barcelona. The cafe of the Fundació invites one after visiting the impressive exhibition of sculptures Miró to a break.
